Redesigning one of the city's most repeated — and most overlooked — audio experiences. Elev8 replaces jarring functional alerts with intentional nature soundscapes, turning a stressful thirty seconds into a small pocket of reassurance.

01 — Overview

A calmer sound for the ride

Every day, millions of people step into a small metal box and wait. The elevator is one of the most frequently repeated experiences in urban life — and one of the least intentionally designed. Elev8 asks a simple question: what if that ride felt like a breath instead of a beep?

Elev8 is a sound design project that reimagines the audio of vertical transit. Instead of the harsh, functional tones we've all been trained to tense up at, it introduces intentional nature soundscapes and reframes every alert as a moment of reassurance.

02 — The Problem

The most repeated sound nobody designed

Elevator sound is one of the most repeated yet least-designed user experiences in urban life. The default is a language of buzzes, dings, and dead air — functional, impersonal, and quietly stressful.

The stakes are small per ride but enormous in aggregate. At this scale, even a minor improvement to a single thirty-second experience can positively affect millions of daily interactions. The problem isn't that the elevator is loud — it's that its sound was never designed to make anyone feel anything at all.

Historical note

The last time anyone deliberately designed the sound of an elevator was 1922 — when "elevator music" was invented to calm passengers terrified of the new, slow, unreliable machines. A century later, that job got outsourced to easy-listening playlists and forgotten. Elev8 picks the thread back up — this time grounded in neuroscience, not novelty.

Why nature is the right instrument

The decision to build the experience around natural sound isn't aesthetic — it's physiological. Decades of research show the nervous system reads nature as a signal of safety.

This traces back to the biophilia hypothesis: over thousands of years, our brains evolved to interpret natural sound as a cue that the environment is stable. Birdsong means no predators nearby; flowing water means a resource is close. Tellingly, in that same 2022 study the mechanical drone of traffic noise did the opposite — it measurably increased depression. Meanwhile, the WHO links chronic exposure to environmental noise with a continuous state of low-grade stress. Elev8 sits exactly at that intersection — swapping a low-grade mechanical stressor for an evolutionary signal of calm.

07 — Reimagining Alerts

The alert, redesigned

The second goal was to rethink the alert itself — the door, the floor, the emergency. Each is still perfectly legible, but re-voiced from a demand into a reassurance.

By grounding the work in the biophilia hypothesis and the measured effect of nature sound on stress, it turns a universal, invisible experience into an opportunity — a signature of calm that a building can offer thousands of times a day.

The business case

This isn't only about feelings. The landmark Human Spaces study of 7,600 workers across 16 countries found that natural elements in a space lift wellbeing 15%, productivity 6%, and creativity 15%. For a landlord or employer, a calmer vertical commute is a low-cost amenity with an outsized, measurable return.
